Making Our Way to Victoria

We were planning to head further north, into The Broughtons, but we decided to change plans for a couple of reasons: we’ve been up there a couple times before, we plan to go up there again (in a future boat), and we just weren’t that interested in dealing with wind most days (with a few calm days thrown in). So, we decided to head south to Victoria.

On January 30th, we left the Octopus Islands and went to Squirrel Cove on Cortes Island. Along the way we went through Hole in the Wall, which is a passage between Sonora Island and Maurelle Island. It was a rainy morning and the waterfalls through the passage were running strong!

While underway, I made another loaf of sourdough bread! Thanks again for the starter, Bri!

We made it to Squirrel Cove on Cortes Island for the night. It was a nice, calm, quiet night. Here’s a picture leaving our anchorage on January 31st.

When we were getting close to Power River, we had a BC Ferry radio us to say that he would pass behind us. I like it when captains communicate their intentions. :-)

The waves were quite big on our way south. Nothing scary, but not a nice comfortable ride either.

Once the conditions settled, I did a walkthrough to put things back away where they belong!

We made it to Pender Harbour on January 31st and stayed for a couple of days, waiting for a good weather window to cross the Strait of Georgia. While we were there, Greg added an access hole to the bilge area on Lia and pumped out whatever water was in there. As you can see in this video, there wasn’t much. To be sure there was no water in the hull, we had Lia pulled out by Madeira Marine in Pender Harbour. In the video below you can see that a small amount of water came out. It was comforting to realize that there was not a bunch of water in there.

While in Pender Harbour, I also took the time to make a sourdough blueberry buckle. It was quite yummy!

On February 3rd, we made it across the Strait of Georgia, making our way to Kendrick Island for the night. It was a nice day to cross the strait. And, it was a nice, quiet evening.

Kendrick Island is right outside of Gabriola Passage, which was flowing quite a bit when we got there. The currents in the area were pretty strong.

On February 4th, we made our way to Montague Harbour. It was a calm, foggy cruise. We saw some sea lions along the way.

It was clear in Montague for a while, but the fog started rolling in.

I have an app that notifies me when I’m in an area that might be able to see the northern lights & it went off that night. So, I went out & captured some pictures. Not sure if I captured anything, but I think I can see a slight bit of color!

We left Montague the next day and went to the dock at Port Browning Marina. This is one of the marinas that runs a Dine & Dock deal in the winter where you get moorage for $35 if you eat at their restaurant while there.
