Back to Gig Harbor - and a Haulout for Lia

After a couple of nice days in Filucy Bay, we headed back to Gig Harbor for some more winds. Here’s a nice view once we left Filucy Bay in the morning.

While passing the tip of Fox Island, we captured a shot of our friends (the Deprez’) house.

And, another friend (previous co-worker Tom) captured this shot of us passing by his house. Thanks Tom!

Here’s a view of us coming up for another pass under the Narrows Bridge.

Once we were settled in Gig Harbor, we took a walk around town. The fall colors are beautiful!

There are a fleet of fishing boats that are from Gig Harbor. On the evening of November 4th, one of them came in. I was very surprised at how bright their lights were!

On our dinghy, Lia, there is a gap between the floor that we walk on and the bottom of the boat. There is no way to see into this space. We’ve been wondering if any water has been getting into this space, so we decided to have her hauled out so we could pull the drain plug for that space. On November 5th, we took Lia to Hylebos Marina for the haul out. Boy, were we surprised at how much water was in there! We’re estimating it was around 50-75 gallons! Luckily this boat is built to still be able to float even if it’s full of water, so this much extra water in the boat wasn’t a safety issue, but something that should be taken care of anyway. We will be contacting the manufacturer to help us determine where we should install a hatch so we can open it regularly and pump the water out. Currently, the only way to get the water out is to pull the boat out of the water & pull the drain plug (this particular plug is under the waterline). We were very happy to realize though that it was fresh water & not salt. Whew! (this means the water is getting in from holes in the surface (bolts, etc) and not leaking in through the hull itself somewhere) It’s always better when a leak is fresh water & not salt! Due to this, we will also be pulling out bolts and sealing them better to slow or stop the leaks that are there. Since the boat was out of the water, we had the bottom pressure washed as well to get her all clean again!

On our way back from Tacoma to Gig Harbor, it was dumping rain!

Then we treated ourselves to happy hour nachos & a beer/cider at The Tides. Yum!

An update on that leak on the boat:

Greg thinks he may have found the culprit! There is a hose that went from our water tank to the toilet that used to be installed. Since we installed a composting toilet, we no longer needed to use this hose. We left the hose in place & just capped it off (so if a future owner wants to go back to the previous toilet, the plumbing is still there). We found that the capped off part was leaking slightly, and there was a pin prick leak in the hose itself. Greg repaired that today and our fingers are crossed that it was the only thing leaking!

On November 7th we are heading out to a couple more anchorages (not sure where yet), but making our way to Poulsbo by next Tuesday. We are looking forwarding to being on the dock for 2 months starting on Wednesday.
